Schweitzer Mountain Resort is the largest ski area in Idaho, with 2,900 acres of skiable terrain spread across two bowls above the shores of Lake Pend Oreille in the northern panhandle. With 10 lifts, a peak elevation of 6,400 feet, and 300 inches of average annual snowfall, Schweitzer consistently flies under the national radar while delivering terrain, snow, and views that rival far more famous mountains. The lake spreads out 4,000 feet below the summit, and on clear days the views reach into Montana and Canada.

Schweitzer opened in 1963, originally built with a single chairlift and a capacity of about 400 skiers. The mountain grew steadily through the following decades, adding terrain, lifts, and a base village that turned it from a local hill into a legitimate destination resort. Unlike most mountains of its size, Schweitzer remains independently owned — not part of Vail Resorts, Alterra Mountain Company, or any major conglomerate. That independence shows up in the culture: no corporate playbook, shorter lift lines, and a genuine locals' mountain feel even as the resort has grown.
The skiing splits across two main zones: the front side, with long groomers and wide-open tree runs, and the Outback Bowl on the north-facing side, where the snow holds better and the terrain gets steeper. Great Divide offers some of the most reliable powder stashes on the mountain, and the summit ridge serves up exposed alpine terrain with views that make you stop mid-run. Schweitzer attracts skiers who have figured out that the best skiing doesn't always come with the biggest name. Mtns Co carries Schweitzer gear because independent mountains with this much terrain deserve to be on the map.
