A Legacy of Innovation and Adventure

Founded in 1957 by uranium tycoon Robert M. Barrett, Solitude's colorful origin story began when Barrett was denied access to restroom facilities at Alta Ski Area. His determination led him to purchase land in Big Cottonwood Canyon and create his own resort. Under the leadership of Gary DeSeelhorst from 1977 to 2015, Solitude underwent significant modernization, including the installation of Utah's first high-speed quad chairlift in 1989. The resort became part of Alterra Mountain Company in 2018, joining the Ikon Pass network while maintaining its independent character. Today, Solitude's terrain spans three distinct areas: the accessible Front Side with sweeping groomers, the challenging expert terrain of Honeycomb Canyon accessed via the Summit Express lift, and multiple bowls offering pristine powder stashes. The resort's high-alpine location and strategic terrain layout create endless opportunities for exploration, whether carving perfect turns on meticulously groomed runs or discovering hidden powder pockets days after a storm.
