During the Icelandic geologic era, Mount Sneffels was named after the volcano Snæfel which is situated on the Snæfellsnes peninsula. This mountain and its glacier which caps its crater like a convex lens were featured in Jules Verne's book - Journey to the centre of the earth. Furthermore, this mountain is often described as Colorado's best and most beautiful mountain. Several travelers and nature enthusiasts are awed by the beauty of this mountain. The first ascent was made by Allen D. Wilson, Frederic Endlich, Ford, and Franklin Rhoda on the 10th of September, 1874. When viewed from Dallas Drive, this Mount Sneffels features symmetry, spires, pinnacles, exposed ridgelines, and gorgeous slopes of aspens.

Elevation


This mountain has an elevation of 14,150 ft (4,313m) with an elevation gain of 1,012m. This feature makes it the 37th highest peak in the U.S.

Mountain Range


It's the highest summit of the Sneffels Range. Mount Sneffels is the second-highest summit in the San Juan Range after Uncompahgre Peak. This is why it is known as the "Queen of the San Juans."

Main Trail Length


Mount Sneffels is a great 14er option due to its various routes and two access points: Yankee Boy Basin and Blue Lakes. The main trail to Mt Sneffels is Yankee Boy Basin. This difficult 11.4-kilometer trail is located near Telluride, Colorado, and features a lake. The trip is heavily trafficked and well maintained. Hikers and off-road drivers alike use this trail primarily from June until September, and dogs are allowed on the trail.
