The peak was named after a Minnesota senator - William Windom. The summit of Windom Peak is situated in La Plata County, Colorado, US. The Peak is the highest point in La Plata County and the entire drainage basin of the San Juan River.

Windom Peak is Colorado's 34th highest Peak and is part of a trio of Fourteeners - Sunlight, Windom, and Eolus. Climbers typically climb Sunlight Peak on the same day.
