The name "Uncompahgre Peak" comes from the word 'Uncompahgre' which implies "dirty water" or "red water spring."

It is a reference to the many hot water springs in the vicinity of Ouray, Colorado. Moreover, Uncompahgre Peak is situated in the Uncompahgre Wilderness in Hinsdale County.

Uncompahgre Peak is the sixth highest summit in the United States of Colorado and The Rocky Mountains of North America. Also, it is the highest point in the drainage basin of the Colorado River and the Gulf of California.

The first recorded ascent of Uncompahgre Peak was by Franklin Rhoda and A.D. Wilson in 1874 of the Hayden Survey. The summit is notorious for severe thunderstorms and lightning on summer afternoons. Again, it is of volcanic origin, but not a volcano, making it a poor quality for climbing.
