Mount Wilson was named after
A.D. Wilson - a topographer with the Hayden Survey. He was among the first ascent party that climbed the Peak through the south ridge (a route not climbed today) on September 13th, 1874. However, It is the highest point in the
Lizard Head Wilderness of San Juan National Forest. Naturally, Mount Wilson is not noticeable from a distance but is easily identifiable due to several antennas close to the summit. However, it is ranked among the top ten most difficult Colorado fourteeners to climb. Mount Wilson is a fairly solid summit with blocky white granite that will get your attention as it is also very airy. Further, the mountain consists of four small glaciers on its summit. These glaciers are the southernmost modern glaciers in the Rocky Mountains and the most southerly in the contiguous United States outside the Sierra Nevada in California.
