Besides, it has been featured in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - The Cross of Snow. The name Mount of the Holy Cross was given due to its distinctive cross-shaped snowfield on its northeast face. Also, the summit was proclaimed Holy Cross National Monument on May 11, 1929, by Herbert Hoover. The first recorded ascent of the Holy Cross was by F. V. Hayden in 1873. The picture of Mount of the Holy Cross was first captured in 1873 by W. H. Jackson during one of Hayden's geographical surveys. It was published in the National Geographic magazine. However, it became a holy place where the sick sought healing.
