Mount of the Holy Cross is located in the Holy Cross Wilderness of White River National Forest. This summit has been the subject of photographers, painters, and more. Besides, it has been featured in a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow - The Cross of Snow. The name Mount of the Holy Cross was given due to its distinctive cross-shaped snowfield on its northeast face. Also, the summit was proclaimed Holy Cross National Monument on May 11, 1929, by Herbert Hoover. The first recorded ascent of the Holy Cross was by F. V. Hayden in 1873. The picture of Mount of the Holy Cross was first captured in 1873 by W. H. Jackson during one of Hayden's geographical surveys. It was published in the National Geographic magazine. Importantly, the summit has a mythological peak with a snowy cross that lingered all summer. It was a sign of God’s stamp of approval on American westward expansion.
