Mount Massive was given its name due to its elongated shape tucked inside the San Isabel National Forest.1873 was the first time an individual got to its trailhead during the Hayden Survey of the American West. Interestingly, it is ranked as the third-highest peak in the Contiguous United States after Mount Elbert and Mount Whitney.

At 14,421 ft (4,398 m) Mount Massive is the Second-highest summit in the United States of Colorado. In addition, it features a prominence of 1,961ft (598m). However, this summit takes an average hiker 4 to 6 hours to the top.
