Mount Elbert often referred to as a gentle giant, was named after Samuel Hitt Elbert; Governor of the territory of Colorado from 1873 to 1874. Besides, the first person to record an ascent to the mountain’s trailhead was Henry W. Stuckle; a member of the Hayden Survey.
Furthermore, this popular mountain is located at San Isabel National Forest 19.4 kilometers from the city of Leadville in Lake County, Colorado.
Interestingly, Mount Elbert is the 27th North America highest Peak and the 14th highest major Peaks in the United States.
Mount Elbert features an elevation recorded to be 14,433 ft which is equivalent to 4399 m. Also, it has an elevation gain of 1,363m. These features make this Peak the 8th prominent Peak in North America.
Emphatically, Mount Elbert is the highest summit of The Rocky Mountains - the Southern Rocky Mountains in the Sawatch Range.
Main Trail Length
There are two major routes to the trailhead; the South Mount Elbert trail and the North Mount Elbert trail - the main route. The North Mount Elbert path is a heavily trafficked 15 kilometers out and back route type located near Twin Lakes in Colorado. In particular, this route features beautiful wildflowers and is recommended for expert hikers. These unique features make this Peak busy in the summer with various climbers and hikers.
Leadville appears to be the closest city to Mount Elbert. Again, the Peak is located off Halfmoon Road, Southwest of Leadville.
