Maroon peak is one of the two peaks making up the maroon bells in the Elk mountains. It's separated from the North maroon peak by about half a kilometer (one-third of a mile). The first ascent to its summit was by C. Wilson being in the 1890s. The maroon peak and north maroon peak (maroon bells) are on the border between Pitkin County and Gunnison County, Colorado, United States. The peak is nested in the Maroon Bells – Snowmass Wilderness of White River National Forest, with the view of the Maroon Bells to the southwest from the Maroon Creek valley.


Maroon Peak features an elevation of 14,156 feet (4315 m) and an elevation gain of 1,598m. This characteristic makes this mountain the 27th highest peak in Colorado.

Main Trail Length

One of the best things about Maroon Peak is its heavily trafficked 17.5 kilometer out and back trail. This trail takes you around a beautiful lake. Besides, this mountain trail is suitable for experienced adventurers. Furthermore, it offers several activities and is best used between March and September. In addition, dogs are also allowed on this trail. On this trail, hikers can experience nature with the view of several wildflower fields and fly-fishers in the tranquil Maroon Lake.

Aspen is 12.4 miles to the Maroon Peak. This makes it the closest town to the Maroon bells.
