This mountain is officially known as Kit Carson Mountain. The peak bears the same name as a fur trapper, wilderness guide, war veteran, and Indian fighter - Christopher Houston "Kit" Carson.

Kit Carson Peak is one of the summits of the Kit Carson Mountain massif. This massif has three summits in all. In particular, Columbia Point and Challenger Point are a part of the massif. Usually, they are accessed from common trailheads.
