Ellingwood Point was named in honor of Albert Russell Ellingwood in 1972- an early pioneer of mountain climbing in Colorado. In particular, Ellingwood's Point inclusion amongst the fourteeners list has been somewhat controversial - it barely qualifies Colorado's 90 m topographic prominence cutoff. However, most administrations do consider it as a true fourteener. Particularly, Ellingwood peak has a great view from Mount Lindsey. Besides, it is somewhat close to its parent Peak - Blanca peak.
