The first ascent to this summit was made by Percy Hagerman and Harold Clark in 1909. The mountain is situated in the Maroon Bells-Snowmass Wilderness of the White River National Forest. Besides, it's one of the most difficult fourteeners to climb in Colorado, chiefly due to its' famously exposed 'knife-edge' ridge.

Main Trail Length


Capitol Peak's Northeast Ridge (Main trail) is the standard route to the summit of Capitol Peak. The route is also known as Knife Edge and is accessed via Capitol Creek and Lake or West Snowmass Creek. The trail is near Snowmass Village, Colorado, and extends 24.3 kilometers out and back. It also features a lake. Only very experienced adventurers attempt this mountain. Besides, it is best used in the summer months.
