Blanca Peak is known to the Navajo people as the White Shell Mountain or the Sacred Mountain of the East. Amazingly, the only part of the beauty of Sierra Blanca Massif is the Blanca Peak.

Furthermore, the summit is the fourth-highest peak of the Rocky Mountains of North America and the United States of Colorado. It can be easily spotted towering against the Great Sand Dunes National Park from almost anywhere in the valley.

Blanca Peak is not only notable for its implicit height, but its great local relief and dominant position at the end of the range.

Elevation

In addition to an elevation of 14,345 ft (4,372 m), Blanca Peak is known with a prominence of 5,326ft (1,623m). Also, the peak rises nearly 7,000ft (2,100m) over the edge of San Luis Valley in only 6miles (9.7km).

Mountain Range

Blanca Peak is situated at the Southern end of the Sangre de Cristo Range - a subrange of the more extensive Sangre de Cristo mountains.

The summit is the highest peak of the Sierra Blanca Massif- the Sangre de Cristo Range, and the Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

Main Trail Length

The trail of Blanca Peak is 30.9 kilometers with a lightly trafficked out and back route type. The trail is used for camping, backpacking, and hiking.

Formally, the Blanca Peak trail begins at Lake Como entirely above the timberline. Again, the trail end is at the ridge leading to Blanca Peak.

Closest Town

This summit lies approximately 20 miles (32km) northeast of the town of Alamosa.
