The Crestone needle is one of the high summits in The rocky mountains of North America known as the Crestones. Crestones feature other mountains including Crestone Peak, Kit Carson Peak, Columbia Point, Challenger Point, and Humboldt Peak. This makes the Crestone needle accessible from common trailheads.

It is one of Colorado's 54 fourteen thousand foot mountains and ranks 20th in the state. Albert Ellingwood and Eleanor David were the first people recorded to get to the mountain summit. This activity took place on the 24th of July, 1916. Via the Crestone Peak/Needle Traverse.
