Mount Shavano is known as the "Angel of Shavano" which implies a snow formation in the image of an angel with its wings stretching outward during spring and early summer. Further, it emerges on the east side of the summit.
Furthermore, Mount Shavano received its name in honor of Chief Shavano - who led the Tabeguache Ute Tribe in the mid-1800s.
