La Plata Peak is the fifth-highest peak of The Rocky Mountains of North America. However, The word "La Plata" is a Spanish word for "The Silver"- a reference to many silver deposits in the area.

It is sited in the Collegiate Peaks Wilderness of San Isabel National Forest. The first team to climb the peak is the Hayden Survey team on July 26, 1873.

The fascinating North Face of La Plata Peak created by La Plata Basin and Ellingwood Ridge can be seen from Highway 82 (west of Twin Lakes) and at the pedestrian overlook at Independence Pass.

La Plata Peak features an elevation of 14,336ft ( 4367m ). In addition, it has a prominence of 1,836ft (560m) and an elevation gain of 1,332m.

La Plata Peak Trailhead is situated on Highway 82 (west of Twin Lakes).

The La Plata, North trail summer trail is the main trail to the mountain's trailhead. The mountain trail is a 15.4km heavily trafficked out and back route type.

Further, this trail follows the northern ridge that divides the La Plata Basin from the La Plata Gulch.
